Feel Like You’re Standing on Shifting Sand?

By Andrea Macie

Do you sometimes feel like you are standing on shifting sand??? (Then you need Christ-like Assurance!)

Matthew 8: 24 "Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: 25 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: 27 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall."

Recently I was at the beach, standing right at the point where the water meets the sand. I noticed that as each wave came in, it pulled sand out from under where I was standing. My “foundation” was being pulled right out from under me with each passing wave. Isn’t that how we feel in life sometimes? Doesn't it feel like our footing gets weakened with every trial or circumstance that hits us? That’s how we might feel, but it doesn’t have to be so concerning those who build their lives on a firmer foundation, which is Jesus Christ and His teachings. The Bible says in Matthew 8:24 that those who hear and follow the guidelines for living found in the Bible will be like a wise person who builds their house on a rock, or in other words, builds their life on a strong foundation. The storms of life will come, but the house will not fall because it is built on a solid foundation.

However, the Bible also says that those who do not listen and obey those guidelines for living will be like a foolish person who builds their house on the sand. Think of a builder who wants to construct a beautiful house. While building he chooses the wrong materials or chooses materials that are less in quality than the contractor had ordered. Or maybe the outside of the house looks great, but the inside is weak and not supported correctly. Then, when the storms of life come the house built on the sand will fall because it’s foundation is weak! Take for example what happened recently in the financial world and Wall Street. People who had put their trust in man for security and assurance were devastated.

So if you feel like your footing is unsure and your foundation is weak, then look to the Word of God and build your life upon the teachings and wisdom of Jesus Christ!

Look only to the Lord Jesus for your:

  1. Security (Ps 121:3, He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber.)
  2. Assurance (Romans 8:14-17, For as many are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out “Abba, Father”. The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs-heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ…) and
  3. Trust (Mark 10:24, Jesus says, “Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the Kingdom of God” and in verse 27 Jesus says, “With men it is impossible [to be saved], but with God al things are possible”. Psalms 37:3 says, “trust in the Lord, and do good” Proverbs 3:5 says, Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.” The world we live in is ever changing and shifting, but our assurance can be in a God that never changes. His Word is true and is the only thing that will bring true security in this life. So ask yourself-What am I building my life upon, solid rock or shifting sand?
