Finding Beauty in the Ordinary

Spotlight on Business-Tammy Randell
Interview by Andrea Macie

Last Fall I had the privilege of visiting Tammy in her home and sitting down with her for a chat about her business of house cleaning. I can’t stress enough the spirit of excellence that I saw in her home! It was decorated beautifully and she shared with me how her #1 passion is to help people decorate on a budget, to make old things new again by repurposing discarded items. Tammy has a gift for re-creating designer looks that she sees in magazines.  Tammy has really grasped hold of the idea that you start small, but think big! She has an office space set-up in her home and runs things as thought she is already the CEO of a company. She spoke many times of her future employees-what faith and vision! Her motto for life & business is RESPECT, HONOR & EXCELLENCE. I know her story will inspire you, it did me! It doesn’t matter where we came from, God can accomplish anything through us if we love Him and are obedient to Him!

Q: When did you know that this was your passion?
A: When I was a teenager, I cleaned my friend’s house because it needed to be done. I was in foster care at 16 and this friend was someone I met there. I knew God at that time and just did what was in my heart to do to bless my friend. I didn’t know at that time how God would use that to bless lots of people. I just wanted better for myself and kids and for others. I wanted to show people how to do the best with what they have.

Q: What would you say is your mission statement?
A: To make a mansion where you are at. No matter what living conditions you are in, you can make it the best you can. I believe in being a good steward over what God has given us. Our kids should see what they can do, take care of what they have been given and then God will give you more. Even when I am in a place where the landlord doesn’t appreciate what he has, I do and I am thankful for what I have.
I had to live independently from a young age, but I asked God to give me a nice place and He did.

Q: How did you know it was “time” to go forward and pursue having your own business?
A: I had a passion for helping people get their lives in order so that they can have a better quality of life. It is important to me that people have time to spend with their families too. By cleaning for them, I give them the gift of more quality time with their families.  I realized that my life is a gift from God. God also showed me how I have a gift in my hands, not just for making things beautiful but also for healing. God says He will give beauty for ashes. I love to hug people, it brings healing. I have compassion for people.

Q: What were some of the preparations you made, spiritually and naturally, to start your own business?
A: I am starting small, but thinking big. You are what you think you are. I am always asking God for original and different ideas.

Q: How do you prepare for your jobs?
A: I know the presence of God is with me when I enter a house. I look for the details and anointing in the natural items. My goal is to leave the ordinary, extraordinary. I represent God when I do a job.

Q: Speak a little bit about what you do when you clean a home:
A: When I clean, it’s two-fold. I give my clients natural and spiritual blessings. I really focus on the bedroom. Your bed is a place of rest. I think that your bed represents the arms of the Lord. It should be a place where you feel secure, safe and peaceful. I always believe God that I will leave the aroma of Jesus when I leave a house. A fragrant perfume in the atmosphere.

Q: Did you ever get discouraged, and how did you bounce back from that?
A: Through divine connections that would encourage and pray for me. I keep prayin’ & pressin’.

Q: How did you handle road blocks that came your way?
A: You can’t get frustrated. Like when my kids are cuttin’ up. I had a revelation that it was a distraction to the vision. I go straight to God and His Word. You’ll only get your answers from God. I learned to run to God and to my spiritual authorities and mentors.  I learned to speak the Word over my kids-they need the Word!

Q: Can you share a testimony?
A: Once I took an apartment to live in even though I didn’t have peace about living there. But God turned it around for good. He brought love to the neighborhood. God was faithful. He kept me from evil. Through the leading of the Holy Spirit, I left my home one day and God kept us from witnessing a murder. After that I knew I had to go, but still waited. Then my daughter got shot in the ankle, but God was still faithful and healed her.
Also, I am a single mom and had fallen out of touch with my dad. I got reconnected to him in 2010. I think it is important to honor our fathers and be forgiving.

Q: Do you have some words of wisdom that helped guide you through the process of starting your own business?
A: Give God a chance to show you, love you, embrace you and teach you His love and the reason why Jesus died. Tap into it, believe it and get close to God while you can!

Q: What would you say has been the greatest lesson you have learned through this process?
A: See how far God has brought me, I am so blessed. I appreciate where I am, there are some people who would love to have what you have. I have learned to be content where I’m at, being thankful for what God has given me right now.

Q: What are your long-term goals?
A: I have a heart for the community and the youth. I see myself as the head of a community of people to bring change to our neighborhoods. I have seen myself at the head of a boardroom table, charging the people around it to help the young.
I want to grow my fashion business. My dream is to have my designs in the Ebony Fashion Show.
Personally, I would like to have more room for my family, for my kids and for my grans. With a separate spot for my office/business.
